Gemstone Scene ArticleCollecting Loose Gemstones
By Lee MacRae
Why would anyone collect items like
loose gemstones, you ask? Well to begin with gemstones are extremely beautiful. And like their higher counterpart,
natural diamonds they can appreciate in value over time. Many in this hobby love to find, collect and finish each and every one of the 150 varieties available. Follow along as we examine the
loose gemstones hobby.
Right at the start you'll need the knowledge on the wide variety of stones available. You'll find it very helpful to know what exactly you're looking for and prevent you from making mistakes. Get the answer to questions like how, where and what to buy.
Number one to look at Is gemstone color. Gemstones at the top of the ladder have colors that are close in pureness to the spectral colors of orange, green, yellow, Violet or blue. Gemstone colors that are somewhat muted or are too dark can lower the value quite easily.
How a gemstone is cut is the second most important value determination to look at before a purchase. The preciseness of the cut determines the amount of light the gemstone stone will reflect. It will fully determine the brilliance of the stone and how much someone will pay for it.
Next to look at is gemstone clarity. Clarity is the term that refers to the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone under consideration. Normally large flaws can be seen with the unaided eye with the others needing a 10X magnification.
Next item to look at is the duo of size and weight. Because gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Size and weight are not necessarily equal from stone to stone. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats a ruby of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An emerald stone would be about 0.95 carats and an Alexandrite gem stone would came in at 1.23 carats.
Collecting various gemstones can create an enjoyable hobby and pastime. And there are so many different types in gemstones you can collect. You can start collecting gemstones like Feldspar (moonstone), Spinel or Axinite for instance. The choice and beauty and variety is almost endless. And if you like a hands on hobby you can find gemstones for yourself instead of buying. Just in the United States in New York you can find Beryl, Brown Tourmaline, Rose Quartz as well as Fresh Water Pearl.

Peridot is one of the few gemstones which exist only in one color green. Fine traces of iron account for the green color with a slight golden hue. It is a variety of the mineral olivine and is formed during volcanic eruptions. The amount of iron determines the variation of the color which can range from yellow-green and olive to dark lime-green. The ancient Romans noticed its color did not change in artificial light, so they named the stone evening emerald. Currently it is found in the U.S. in Arizona and New Mexico, Burma, Pakistan and China. Peridot ranks 6.5 to 7.0 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness and is the birthstone for the month of August.

The Gemstones Review
Our Featured Gemological WriterSo You Want To Collect Loose Gemstones
By Lee MacRae
Why would someone go to the trouble of collect
loose gemstones? For many people it's because they've been sought for their beauty for many centuries. And just like
natural diamonds they can appreciate in value over time. Many people love to find, collect and finish each and every one of the 150 varieties available. Follow along as we examine the
loose gemstones hobby.
At the very beginning you'll need the knowledge on the wide variety of stones available. This knowledge will help you to know what exactly you're looking for and prevent you from making mistakes. Without the proper knowledge you can make costly mistakes.
To start with, an important aspect in gemstone evaluation is color. Without a doubt, gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. Gemstones are so related to color that they've even become associated with particular ones. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones are valued much higher the closer they come to the natural spectral colors of violet, blue, green,, orange and red. They become less valuable the farther they deviate from the pure natural color.
How the gemstone has been cut is the second most important value determination to look at. The precision of cut is the factor that determines the amount of light the stone will reflect. It will ultimately factor highly in the brilliance of the stone and how much someone will pay for it.
The clarity in a stone is an important consideration. Clarity refers to the amount of inclusions (trace elements or large particles of other elements or minerals) that a gem has. The gemstone without flaws is definitely worth much more. To examine flaws not seen with the naked eye requires a 10X gemstone clarity magnifier or gem microscope. Most hobbyists will buy a jewelers diamond gemstone loupe 10X for viewing stamps, coins, beads as well as gems.
Next item to look at is the duo of weight and size. Due to the fact gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Weight and size are not necessarily equal across the board. Take the example of a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and a ruby of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An equal sized Emerald would be 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite gem stone would came in at 1.23 carats.
Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can create an enjoyable hobby and pastime. And there are so many different types in precious and semi precious stones that you can collect. You can collect gemstones like Lapis lazuli, Citrine or Zeolite (Thomsonite) and then try others. The opportunities are seemingly endless. And if you like a hands on hobby you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. Take the example of the US. In Texas You can find Beryl, Pearl and Tourmaline.

Tips About loose diamond wholesale
Everything changed in the "diamond world" when diamond stones started being
discovered outside of India. First, there was Borneo and then somewhere along
the line Brazil and China joined the fray. Then the glittering light of the
diamond appeared in South Africa. It happened in the 19th century. The first
known South African diamond was picked up on a beach on the African coast by a
boy who was walking through the sand. This event precipitated a new "diamond
rush" with its roots in that part of the world.

The 1370-carat Neelanjali Star Ruby has been listed in the Guinness Book of
World Records as the largest double star ruby in the world. The enormous star
ruby of Indian origin belongs to the retired lawyer G. Vidyaraj who lives in
Bangalore, India, and claims his descent from the kings of the Vijayanagar
Empire. Vidyaraj inherited the Neelanjali Ruby and the other enormous rubies,
the 3,553-carat Ravirathna Ruby and the 2,475-carat Rajarathna Ruby from his
father, who had inherited them from his ancestors who were direct descendants of
the Vijayanagar royal family. In fact neither Vidyarajs father or his ancestors
would have been aware that they were in possession of such enormously large
rubies, as the large rough stones were actually sacred objects of worship known
as lingams, the symbols of Shiva, called Saligramas. Over the years these
objects of worship were covered with layers of grime and soot, and their bright
red colors concealed. No one would dare touch these objects for fear of
desecration, and the secret of the stones remained hidden for centuries, until
Vidyaraj who was not much inclined towards religion, out of curiosity began to
investigate the nature of the stones, by cleaning them with soap and brush. To
his utter amazement the bright red color of the stones were exposed, which were
subsequently identified as rubies.
