How To Start Loose Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

The term gemology refers to the art, profession and science of evaluating and identifying gemstones from natural diamonds to loose gemstones. A number of people taken up this profession as a hobby. They become interested in collecting items like loose gemstone or natural diamonds. You'll even find some that like to travel to different areas close by or to other countries to look for raw gemstones. Some even tumble or learn to cut their own gemstones. If you have an interest in this hobby read along as we reveal the various aspects of gemstone collecting.

The first thing you need to do is to get yourself some reading material. You want to know as much as you possibly can about the subject of gemstones. The more you understand about gemstones the less likely you are to make a mistake. You will know exactly what to look for.

First on your list to consider is the color of the gemstone. You'll want the gemstone to be as close in color as possible to the pure spectrum colors. This means violet, orange, yellow, green, blue, and red. Generally, the prices very pale or very dark semiprecious and precious stones are lower than the vibrant colors.

The cut of the stone is extremely important and factors highly into the appraisal of not only diamonds but along with your gemstones. An excellent cut will showcase the gemstone's color, lessen any inclusions and highlight the proportions and symmetry of the stone. One way to determine the precision in its cut is to check if it is able to reflect light on a consistent level throughout the surface of the stone. If the stone is cut on the shallow side most of the light will refract out instead of reflecting inside the gemstone. Gemstone color will be washed out.

Another factor to look at is the clarity of the stone under consideration. This means the stones purity with no internal conclusions, particles or spots within the crystal structure. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws are hard to find and make your stones very valuable.

Next on the agenda is the duo of size and weight. Because gemstones can vary in density or specific gravity. Weight and size are not necessarily equal across the board. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats a ruby of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An Emerald of equal size would be approximately 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite gem stone would came in at 1.23 carats.

Taking up the hobby of gemstones can give you an enjoyable pastime and rewarding in the long run. You can start small and don't have to spend a lot of money and yet you can end up with some very beautiful stones. Many people love to take vacations to go looking for gemstones. For example in Arizona you can find Agatized wood (Petrified wood), Azur-Malachite, Turquoise, Garnet, Peridot, Jasper and Moissanite Or you can take the time to travel and find opal in Coober Pedy, Andamooka or Mintabie in South Australia, topaz in Torrington, New South Wales, Australia or hunt the peridot fields in Mortlake in Victoria, Australia.
