How To Collect Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

For many people collecting various loose gemstones or loose diamonds is a favorite pastime. Many people have a great love Of the assorted number of gemstones found around the world today. Follow along as we look at a number of factors you should understand when starting to collect gemstones yourself.

To begin with your first priority is to get yourself some reading material. You want to know as much as possible about precious and semiprecious gemstones. The more you understand about gemstones the wiser will be your purchases. You'll know exactly what to buy.

First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. It is a fact that gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. Gems have become so synonomous with color, they've even become associated with particular ones. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones are valued much higher the closer they come to the natural spectral colors of orange, green, yellow, violet and blue. They drop in value the farther they deviate from the natural color.

Gemstone cut is one of the most important traits in evaluating gemstones. The cut has to be done correctly to reflect light properly. A poor cut can't reflect the light consistently over its surface. Color saturation, hue and tone will always look inconsistent.

Our next consideration is the aspect of clarity. The aspect of clarity refers to the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone under consideration. Normally large flaws are visible to the naked eye while others require close examination using a 10X magnification.

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to size because it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may have the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different pricing structures. This is due to the nature of gemstone difference regarding specific gravity or relative density depending upon the materials chemical composition and crystal structure type For example, a one carat round diamond with normal proportions is approximately 6.5 mm around. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh in at 1.55 carats instead.

Getting involved in collecting gemstones can give you an enjoyable pastime and also rewarding in the long run. It doesn't have to be very expensive and yet you can build a very exquisite collection. Many people love to set aside vacation or weekend time to go hunting for raw gemstones. For example in Nevada you can hunt for Rock Crystal, Citrine, Nevada Turquoise and Virgin Valley Black Fire Opal. Or you can take the time to travel and find opal in Opalton, Yowah, Queensland, Austalia, topaz in Killiecrankie, Tasmania or check out the Moonstone regions in Moonstone Hill, Queensland, Australia.
