Starting To Collect Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Many people today say collecting loose gemstones or loose diamonds is their favorite hobby. They simply love the beauty and the colors of the various gemstones found worldwide today. Follow along as we examine the things you need to know when starting to collect gemstones yourself.

The first thing you need to do is to visit the library and get some books. You want to learn as much as possible about your new hobby. The more you know about each kind of gemstone the wiser will be your purchases. You will know exactly what to look for.

The first criteria you need to evaluate is stone color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored natural materials you can find. These materials are so related to their color that they've even become associated with particular ones. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones will have a higher value the closer they come to the natural spectral colors of yellow, blue, violet, green, orange and red. They are valued much less the farther they are from the pure natural color.

Stone cut is the second most important value determination to consider before buying. How precise the cut is determines the amount of light the gemstone stone will reflect. It will ultimately ultimately determine the stones brilliance and its final value.

Our next consideration is gemstone clarity. The aspect of clarity refers to the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone under consideration. Normally large flaws can easily be seen with the naked eye with others requiring a 10X magnification.

Next up are size and weight. Except for corals and pearls, all gemstones are priced by the carat. One carat equals a 0.2 grams. You should know however that weight and size are not the same in gemstones. Density or specific gravity can very. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats, you will find a similar sized ruby or sapphire is 1.20 carats.

Getting involved in collecting gemstones can become an enjoyable pastime and also rewarding in the long run. You can take your time and not lay out a lot a cash at the start and yet you can buy some very beautiful items. Many people loved to spend weekends to go looking for gemstones. Just in the United States in New York you can find Beryl, Brown Tourmaline, Rose Quartz as well as Fresh Water Pearl. And if you like to travel farther you can find opal at Lightning Ridge in NSW, Austalia, topaz in Mt Surprise or O'Briens Creek in Queensland, Australia or hunt the sapphire fields in Anakie, Rubyvale, Sapphire, Glenalva, The Willows, Inverell or Glen Innes in Queensland, Austalia.

Hints About loose diamonds for sale

The amount and quality of light reflecting from the surface of a gemstone is known as its lustre. For example, vitreous is a "glass-like lustre" and adamantine is the 'very high lustre' seen on the surface of a polished diamond. The lustre of gemstones are also described in terms that are easy to relate to, i.e. metallic, resinous, pearly, silky, greasy, waxy and dull. It is usually found (with exceptions) that the harder the gemstone material the brighter the lustre. The quality of the surface polish is important, as a poor polish will display a poor lustre.
