Starting The Hobby Of Loose Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Many people today say collecting loose gemstones or loose diamonds is their favorite hobby. They simply love the beauty and the colors of the wide array of gemstones found worldwide today. This article will look at a number of factors you should understand when starting this interesting gemstone hobby.

The very first step in starting the hobby of collecting gemstones the smart way is by getting adequate knowledge about them. By visiting a local library you can find books on the subject that will make you an informed buyer.

The first item to look at should be the color of the gemstone. You want the gemstone to be as close in color as possible to the pure spectrum colors. We are talking about blue, green, yellow, orange, red and violet. Generally, the prices very pale or very dark semiprecious and precious gemstones are lower.

Gemstone cut is very important and is used not only to appraise diamonds but gemstones in general as well. A good cut highlights the natural color of the gemstone, diminishes its inclusions, and highlight the proportions and symmetry of the stone. One way to determine the precision of the cut is to look at how consistently it reflects the light throughout its surface. If the stone is cut on the shallow side most of the light will refract out rather than reflecting inside the stone. That will make the gem seem washed out and windowed.

Next to look at is gemstone clarity. Clarity is the term that refers to internal flaws (inclusions) or the external blemishes of the gemstone. Normally large flaws you can usually see with your naked eye with others needing to be magnified 10X

Next on the agenda is the duo of weight and size. Due to their nature gemstones vary and specific gravity or density. Size and weight are not necessarily equal from stone to stone. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats a sapphire of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An Emerald of equal size would be approximately 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite stone would be about 1.23 carats.

Although gemstones are normally used for jewelry, they are perfectly good collectibles in their own right. Actually there are many interesting and attractive gems that are just too big or fragile to be used for jewelry. Take each gemstone and think of it as a piece of art, a miniature sculpture to be treasured for its unique nature and vibrant colors. And unlike many hobbies where you have to buy everthing you can use vacation time to actually hunt for raw gemstones in stead of buying. In the United States in Hawaii you can find Peridot and Coral. And in Canada you can hunt for nephrite jade in Mount Sidney Williams, British Columbia or pink and dark blueish spinels in Wakefield, Quebec and even hessonite garnet in Asbestos, Quebec. Take up a hobby of loose gemstone collecting and enjoy yourself.

The Mandalay Ruby. This 48.019-carat cushion-shaped ruby was offered for sale by
Sothebys New York on October 18th, 1988 but received no bids. Sothebys implied
that it may have been the 47-carat J.N. Forster Ruby, which was found sometime
before 1877, but this is quickly ruled out. Two large Burma rubies brought to
England in 1875, weighing 37 and 47 carats. These were put on the market by the
Burmese royal family and were later recut by Forster to 32 5/16 and 39 9/16 ct (
or 38 9/16 ct); one sold for 10,000, the other for 20,000, respectively.
Sotheby's also implied at the same time that it could be one other famous yet
unnamed ruby weighing 46 carats; oblong in form (probably cut); mounted in a
brooch with four brilliant-cut diamonds and sold (or bought in) at Christie's of
London on May 7th, 1896 for 8000. Many doubt this version of its history as
well.

Amethyst is the most highly valued gemstone in the quartz family of minerals. Colors range from pale lilac to deep purple. Amethysts are routinely enhanced, meaning they are heat treated to improve their appearance or durability. They are often considered the color of royalty because amethysts have long been treasured by ancient kings and emperors. They were once prized even more than diamonds. The amethyst is often referred to as the Bishops Stone, as it is worn by bishops to symbolize their triumph over worldly vices.
