Why would anyone collect items like loose gemstones, you ask? Well to begin with they've been sought for their beauty for many centuries. And like their more familiar cousin, natural diamonds, they can become extremely valuable over the years. The first thing you need to do is to get yourself some reading material. You want to understand everything there is to know about the subject of gemstones. The more you understand about each kind of gemstone the better off you'll be. You'll know exactly what to buy.
The first item to consider should be the color of the gemstone. You want the gemstone to be as close as possible to the pure colors of the spectrum. This means violet, orange, yellow, green, blue, and red. The prices for very pale or very dark gemstones are lower than the vibrant colors.
Gemstone cut is the next factor to consider before a purchase is made. The preciseness of the cut is the factor that determines the amount of light the gemstone stone will reflect. The cut will ultimately determine the stones brilliance and its final value.
Our next consideration is the issue of gemstone clarity. Clarity refers to the the internal conclusions or flaws of a stone being considered. Any large flaws you can usually see with your naked eye with others needing to be magnified 10X
Next item to look at is the duo of weight and size. Because gemstones can vary in density or specific gravity. Weight and size are not equal for each and every stone. Take the example of a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and a sapphire of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An emerald stone would be about 0.95 carats and an Alexandrite stone would be about 1.23 carats.
Collecting various gemstones can create an enjoyable hobby and pastime. And there is a wide range and variety when it comes to gemstones. The Reward of Faith Sapphire. This stone was was found in 1975 at the Reward
gemfield near Rubyvale in Queensland, Australia. In 1983 it was cut into the
52.36-carat round you see here, measuring 22.35 mm across and 13.49 mm deep. It
is still owned by its original owner. The stone's color in the photograph is
close to the true color but this does change considerably, to a deeper red,
depending on the nature of the light, although perhaps not strongly enough to be
called a color change sapphire.

An opal is actually what is known as a mineraloid, a shapeless gel with silicium
dioxide that was deposited at a low temperature in crevices and fissures of all
different types of rock. The most common types of rock where they were deposited
are limonite, sandstone, rhyolite and basalt. It can also form original fossils
or replace fossils that have already been formed, and collectors find this
phenomenon very interesting. Opals are relatively young gems, and they are so
fragile they could never have survived early geological upheavals that produced
other types of stones. Opals did occur in volcanic masses of calcite that filled
the veins in lava rock. Hot, briny gel like mixtures would rise up to the
surface from the volcano which decomposed the calcite. What was left behind was
colloidal silica, and this along with water later produced opals.

There are many other common types of treatment to enhance the beauty of colored gemstones. Emeralds are often oiled and waxed to protect them and to hide fine lines that naturally occur in the stone. Some sapphires have their blue color enhanced using diffusion, a chemical process. Certain stones are treated with radiation, again mimicking the processes of nature. All these practices are standard in the jewelry industry; in fact, enhancement is so common that good quality unenhanced stones often come with a certificate stating that fact.
