Starting The Hobby Of Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is a term referring to the art, profession and science of evaluating and identifying gemstones from loose gemstones to natural diamonds. Many people take up gemology as a passionate hobby. They become interested in making a collection of items like loose gemstone or natural diamonds. Some people even begin to visit different areas nearby or in other countries to look for rough gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If this sounds like a hobby you would like to get involved in read along as this article discusses the different aspects of this hobby.

Right at the beginning, what you need is to get yourself some reading material. You want to know as much as you possibly can about precious and semiprecious gemstones. The more you learn about the hobby of gemstones the less likely you are to make a mistake. You will know exactly what you are looking at.

The first criteria you need to evaluate is stone color. Without a doubt, gemstones are the most intensely colored natural materials you can find. Gemstones are so related to color that they've even had their names combined with associated colors. Without a doubt you will recognize sapphire blue, ruby red, jade green, aquamarine, emerald green or turquoise. Gemstones will have a higher value the closer they are to the colors in the spectrum of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. They become less valuable the more they move away from the spectral color.

Gemstone cut is easily one of the most important aspects when you consider a gemstone's value. The gemstone must be cut in a way that reflects light back to the viewer. A stone that has a poor cut can't reflect the light consistently over its surface. The hue, tone and color saturation will be inconsistent.

Next to look at is the aspect of gemstone clarity. Clarity is the term that refers to the external blemishes or the internal conclusions or flaws of a stone. Normally large flaws are visible to the unaided eye while others need a 10X magnification.

Next item to look at is the duo of size and weight. Due to the fact gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Weight and size are not necessarily equal across the board. Take the example of a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and a sapphire of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An Emerald of equal size would be approximately 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite stone would be about 1.23 carats.

Collecting various gemstones can create an enjoyable hobby and pastime. And there is a wide range and variety in precious and semi precious stones that you can collect. You can collect gemstones like Alexandrite and other varieties of chrysoberyl, Sapphire or Turquoise and then try others. The opportunities are seemingly endless. And if you like to save money but love vacations you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. For example in Montana you'll find Agate, Sapphire, Beryl, Amethyst, Smoky Quartz, Obsidian, Tourmaline and Garnet.

Hints About loose diamonds

De Beers reigned as the supreme supplier of diamonds until other countries began
successful operations. One country is Australia. Diamond entrepreneurs and
geologists began searching for kimberlite pipes in the Kimberly region of
Western Australia in 1969. The search went on for 10 years and on October 2,
1979 the Argyle pipe was discovered. Once it was decided that the enterprise
would be economical they started to mine the area in 1983, and the Argyle
Diamond Mine was given its commission in December 1985.

The Patricia Emerald Crystal was discovered in the Columbian Andes' Chivor Mine
in 1920 and is named after the mine owner's daughter. Not only is it one of the
largest gem-quality emeralds in the world, but it is also dihexagonal, or 12-
sided, and measures 2" 1". The stone has flaws, but this is common in
emeralds -- the vast majority of faceted emerald gems have flaws. The stone
resides in the New York Museum of Natural History.
