How To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is the science, art and profession of identifying and evaluating gemstones from natural diamonds to loose gemstones. Many people take up gemology as a passionate hobby. They become very interested in starting to collect loose diamonds or loose gemstones. You'll even find some that like to visit various locations close by to look for rough gemstones. Some even tumble or learn to cut their own gemstones. If this hobby interest you follow along as we show you the in and outs of gemstone collecting.

Right at the start you need to read up on the wide variety of stones available. This knowledge will help you to know the properties of each stone and prevent you from wasting your money. This will help you make informed decisions.

The first criteria you need to evaluate is stone color. Without a doubt, gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. Gemstones are so related to color that they've even become associated with particular ones. Everyone knows ruby red, emerald green, sapphire blue, aquamarine, turquoise, and jade green Gemstones will have a higher value the closer they are to the colors in the spectrum of orange, green, yellow, violet and blue. They are valued much less the farther they are from the pure natural color.

The cut of your gemstone is an important factor to consider when you consider a gemstone's value. The gemstone must be cut with precision to reflect the light properly. A gemstone with an improper cut can't reflect the light consistently over its surface. The color hue, color tone and saturation will always appear inconsistent

Our next consideration is the aspect of gemstone clarity. Clarity refers to the internal flaws (inclusions) or the external blemishes of the gemstone under consideration. Normally large flaws you can usually see with your naked eye while others need a 10X magnification.

Next on the agenda is the duo of size and weight. Due to their nature gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Size and weight are not necessarily equal from stone to stone. Take the example of a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and a sapphire of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An equal sized Emerald would be 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite gemstone would be about 1.23 carats.

Collecting various gemstones can create an enjoyable hobby and pastime. And there is a wide range and variety in gemstones you can collect. You could try collecting Diamond, Sugilite Bixbite (Red beryl) and then try others. The varieties are nearly endless. And if money is tight you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. Take the example of the US. In Florida you can find Chalcedony and Conch Pearl.

Peridot is one of the few gemstones which exist only in one color green. Fine traces of iron account for the green color with a slight golden hue. It is a variety of the mineral olivine and is formed during volcanic eruptions. The amount of iron determines the variation of the color which can range from yellow-green and olive to dark lime-green. The ancient Romans noticed its color did not change in artificial light, so they named the stone evening emerald. Currently it is found in the U.S. in Arizona and New Mexico, Burma, Pakistan and China. Peridot ranks 6.5 to 7.0 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness and is the birthstone for the month of August.

So You Want To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? Well for one thing they've been sought for their beauty for many centuries. And like their more familiar cousin, natural diamonds, they can appreciate in value over time. Many in this hobby love to collect and show case each and every one of the 150 varieties available. Read long as we examine the loose gemstones hobby.

To start off right you'll need the knowledge on the wide variety of stones available. This knowledge will help you to know what you're buying so you buy the right items. A knowledgeable buyer is a wise one.

First, color is a major part in evaluating a gemstone. The closer the color of the gemstone is to its pure spectral color the more valuable the stone becomes. Traditional spectral colors include violent, blue, green,, orange and red. Colors that tend to be darker or palerthan a pure color are considered a lower value.

Gemstone cut is one of the most important traits in determining gemstone value. The cut has to be done with precision to reflect the light properly. A stone that has a poor cut will not reflect light in a consistent way. The hue, tone and color saturation will always look inconsistent.

Next to look at is the aspect of gemstone clarity. Clarity is the term that refers to the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone. Any large flaws you can usually see with your naked eye with the others needing a 10X magnification.

Gemstones are often categorized according to their size aspect because it is more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be of the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different prices as well. This is due to the difference regarding relative density or specific gravity and depends on the materials chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. For example, a one carat round diamond with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Collecting gemstones can be very rewarding hobby. And there is a wide range and variety in precious and semi precious stones that you can collect. You can collect gemstones like Obsidian, Topaz or Zeolite (Thomsonite) for instance. The varieties are nearly endless. And if you like a hands on hobby you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. For example in New York you can find Beryl, Brown Tourmaline, Rose Quartz as well as Fresh Water Pearl.

Even the hardest gemstone variety can be vulnerable to breakage if it has
inclusions that weaken the crystal structure. Exercise common sense: if you have
a ring set with a softer gem variety or an included stone, take it off before
strenuous activity. Even the hardest gemstones like Diamonds, Rubies and
Sapphires can shatter with a single well-placed blow especially if they have
inclusions, which weaken the crystal structure.

Topaz is a very large stone. One giant gem at the Viennese Historical museum is
reputed to weigh 585,000 carats. The rarest topaz is the Imperial Topaz and pink
topaz. Pakistan is the only place today where rose-red tinted topaz can be found
today. All other pink topazes get their color from heat treatments of up to 475?
C. Imperial topaz is has a yellow tint to it while other members of the topaz
family can be completely colorless. Some of the most beautiful examples of topaz
are the famous blue topaz which can have colorful ranges starting with light
blue stones. The very deep blue topaz is artificially produced by heating and
irridation processes. One of the most interesting characteristics about topaz is
that it bleaches in daylight and then renews itself as the light subsides. The
color changes occur because of natural heating and irridation.
